Up n Up

       11x14           mixed media

The lines of ink and pencil help move this watercolor away from rigorous realism to a relaxed sketch.
The photo reference for this watercolor was taken at Devil’s Lake State park in Wisconsin. Although I am not fond of the name it is a great place to hike -overlooking the lake and rolling hills. The 400 feet elevation rock climb was made possible by the WPA arranging granite rock steps over and  around huge boulders. I am sure we will want to return.

All sketches were completed in a 7x7 hard bound skectch book, WN paints in my travel kit, carried a bit of water in a small plastic bottle.

The cool Olympic Peninsula of Washington was refreshing change from the heat in Wisconsin this past week. We do not often visit the West Coast and delight in being there. I will probably never make a ‘real’ painting of any of these sketches. However this is my way of increasing the enjoyment of the beauty in front of me-of seeing it better. The making of a line-and-wash sketch takes considerably longer than taking a photo. So I take note of value difference of trees, angles of rocks color of water and sky, the smells of the ocean and sounds of crashing waves.

Someone wrote long ago………..
The seas have lifted up, O LORD,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the LORD on high is mighty.

Also Ed Whitney talked of the relentless pounding of sea saying ‘move over’ and the rocks replying ‘not one inch’...the battles continues. And is great to watch.

So this is my offering…enjoy

Why Watercolor

I prefer Watercolor because I enjoy the process of laying the pigment on paper, the transparency, spontaneity and the ease of painting the shapes and colors I want and the look of the finished work. Watercolor pigments provide a wide variety of effects: hard and soft edge, layering, transparent or opaque and granulation. It is just a fascinating medium.

The subjects I paint are mostly realistic yet uniquely rendered by choices of colors, shapes. I really enjoy the process of creating vibrant colors next to each other and designing my compositions. The great Ed Whitney, instructor in design and watercolor, taught “an artist is a shape maker, a symbol collector and an entertainer”. I set this as a goal.

With all painters, as knowledge and understanding of self grows through experience it brings a uniqueness and freedom to the art work

Talent is a gift. Instruction can be acquired. I am grateful for both
Painting is a journey for me. There always is something more to paint.

I enjoy the teaching aspect of painting; seems it is just part of who I am.
