Third is short series.  I wanted to pick up the green found in Vase n Pepper to make a contrast with in these three.  The white shirt with stars added some perkiness.

It seems when I have not painted for a while I revert to the “vase and flower” series…so that I can play with color.  These were fun and reminiscent of some ideas cleaned for recent workshops with Karen Knutson, Mike Bailey and Myrna Wacknov.  A bit of collage, oil pastel and graphite pencil help finish these two efforts.  I like them.  What do you think?

  I include below a few of the ‘vase n flower’ series.  About two years ago, I did about twenty studies sized at 10x11.  This a non-standard size, which takes extra, expense to frame.  So I was thinking……” not production, not to hang on wall, not be successful and not hope to sell nor gift to the granddaughter”.  This freed my mind and allowed me to play and discover and ask “what if…?”  If only we would always have that freedom to create!

This painting has gone through a major transformation.  Several months ago, my effort was a very red vase, red flower with dark blue background.  For a lone time I could not ‘see’   the issues with it.  Then recently it was very clear… it least to my way of thinking.  The vase was too flat, too centered and balanced, the flowers without much variation, only a few lost edges, and just too obvious.  I stated adding light value and finally eliminated all the blue, replacing with warm and cool grays with textured pattern repeated with variations.  I replaced the warm in top corners with cool blue-gray with a nice contrast to the red posies.  The flowers were given warm, cool, light dark treatment.  Then I added the lines for entertainment.  When the painted dried (and darken as acrylic does), I was finally very satisfied with it.  Sold at first public viewing!

Another attempt to be not real, to be painterly. The posies were drawn with colored pencil with hardly any attempt on accuracy- just a suggestion of flower. Abstract shapes in background for entertainment and ambiguity. In the process of evaluating, I noticed that I had made some nearly equal rectangle in lower left. I modified it some by adding the gray shading and intensifying the red. I think it is ok, but not the best effort.
