Hey, diddle, diddle

Watercolor    13x13      Prints Available
Hey, diddle, diddle
Hey, diddle, diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed  To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Vase n Red Red

Vase n Red Red   12x12  mostly watercolor

Vase n Eloise 12x12  mixed watermedia

Third is short series.  I wanted to pick up the green found in Vase n Pepper to make a contrast with in these three.  The white shirt with stars added some perkiness.

Available for $100 un-framed.

VASE n DOODLE    12x12    mostly watercolor
It seems when I have not painted for a while I revert to the “vase and flower” series…so that I can play with color.  These were fun and reminiscent of some ideas cleaned for recent workshops with Karen Knutson, Mike Bailey and Myrna Wacknov.  A bit of collage, oil pastel and graphite pencil help finish these two efforts.  I like them.  What do you think?

 available  at $100 each  un-framed

I include below a few of the ‘vase n flower’ series.  About two years ago, I did about twenty studies sized at 10x11.  This a non-standard size, which takes extra, expense to frame.  So I was thinking……” not production, not to hang on wall, not be successful and not hope to sell nor gift to the granddaughter”.  This freed my mind and allowed me to play and discover and ask “what if…?”  If only we would always have that freedom to create!

Untitled 22x30 Watercolor

Untitled           22x30     Watercolor

I am unsure about this one.  I like the watercolor feel, edges quality and the strong value statement.  However, the colors do not seem to be “me.”  I like warmer compositions.  There is this tugging inside me now to paint watercolor…meaning enjoying the flow, freshness, the paint doing its thing…that distinct look only found in watercolor.  Not sure where I am going ….  .  More coming.  Any ideas what to name this one?

Broken Arrow OK Morning

Broken Arrow OK Morning  11x15   watercolor
In May of this year, I was able to attend a workshop “Beyond the Obvious” by Mike Bailey.  It was a great time.  One day, Mike mentioned the building across the street enjoying the sun and shadows.  the next day, he brought in a painting. (He posted his on his blog, dated May 12 2014.)  I just had to try it too.  I was able to get a traditional fresh look with strong light and dark value.  $75 unframed

Blue Vases After Skip

Blue Vases After Skip     15x22 watercolor

I found this painting while returning my studio to order when the update was finished.  This was painted about 1996 soon after a workshop with Skip Lawrence.  He encouraged the emphasis of color contrast.  So here, there is a dominance of blue with variation of warm to color.  Low-key warms are placed next-to the cools.  The fiddler has found its way into a number of works.  I believe his teaching has noticeably influenced my choices.  I still like this one.  What do you think?

Two Flower Studies

The Ink added depth and entertainment. The teal blue perked it up a bit. It was fun to do!

Demo of Gradation   ≈7 ½ x 14     watercolor

A fresh demo emphasizing gradation in the colors in the background... warm to cool and darker to lighter.  The intention is to encourage the viewer’s eye to move around the painting.

Red Posies Mix

Red Posies Mix     watercolor collage    11x14

This delightful vase and flowers was originally absolutely centered on a 10x11 paper. I really liked the painting, but the centering bothered me muchly. So I cut and tore, found another old discarded work to take some pieces from, painted some background on a sheet of watercolor and reassembled it and was pleased with the results. I think I may try this idea again.

This was then sprayed with acrylic varnish and mounted on a cradled wood frame, ready to hang. Available for $85 plus tax and shipping.

Shirley’s Trees

Shirley’s Trees 10x11 watercolor and ink
Sketch by Shirley Trevena

I continue to study the two books that I have by Shirley Trevena. Her work is very “watercolory”. By that I mean: transparent and free flowing, yet very rich in color, good design and creative. It is representational, however I would not call it realism. So some times when I need some inspiration, I ‘copy’ …. So here it is. The black is India Ink, used to make sure this had enough abstract qualities. What do you think about this one?
