The lines of ink and pencil help move this watercolor away from rigorous realism to a relaxed sketch.
The photo reference for this watercolor was taken at Devil’s Lake State park in Wisconsin. Although I am not fond of the name it is a great place to hike -overlooking the lake and rolling hills. The 400 feet elevation rock climb was made possible by the WPA arranging granite rock steps over and around huge boulders. I am sure we will want to return.

i do like the relatively soft washes punctuated by the harder edged lines and darks provided by the pen and pencil. i think it could have worked with dark paint in those areas, but this is more interesting; good choice.
